Front Cover - Logo Initial Ideas

I begun designing my logo by thinking of a word (perception) and writing it using a variety of typography styles until I was content with one. I eventually decided to use a simple italic font and developed it as you can see on the right hand page. I then furher developed it by adding colour using watercolour paints as shown below.

The last design is the one that I will put onto the front cover of my magazine.

My Edited Logo

This is was the best logo that I created amoungst the rest in my sketch book, that I chose to add to the front cover of my magazine. As my logo was handmade I thought I could make it look even more effective and appealing to the eye using Adobe Photoshop. I used the Drop Shadow option and altered the opacity to 46% which makes it look bolder and brighter. These effects will the logo to compliment aswell as stand out on the front cover as it will be placed on the bright blue sky. (Also, to ensure that none of the white sections around or within the word will be visible on the front cover, I used the Selection tool to seperate the background from the writing).

Feature Page Edit

I used this link to create a water ripple effect using Photoshop for my background. I decided to create a water effect as rippled water can be associated with water at the beach e.g: Brighton. Unfortunately I was unsatisfied with the outcome.
Colour pallet to help me select colours and textures for my feature page.
The three colours on the right are my final choice for the page.
As I wasn't satisfied with the water effect I created, I used this image from the internet to add to one side of the page spread.
I used the Colour Balance option to adjust the colour to a blue tone so it has a more summer 'feel' of a reflection of the sky,  rather than a dirty green colour.
I wanted to add another feature of Brighton that could stand out. As my pictures pixilated as I enlarged them,  I used this image from the internet

I copied and pasted the image above into Photoshop to make it my own as I got it from the internet. I selected two colours to edit it with; blue and black and used the photocopy option to add an effect.
I thought that the image above was slightly dull and wouldn't look as effective on my page spread as I wanted the page to look attractive to all ages. Another one of my intentions was to use colours that are associated with summer according to my research on summer colours on google images. I changed the colours to pink and orange and used the halftone pattern option to create a cartoon-like effect.

This is my final feature page spread, with an altered title; pink and orange colours and a different font (Chalkduster) which I used for the other text as well. I chose this font particularly because it reminded me of the texture that is created when using a stick to write words in the sand at a beach. Although this is not a feature at Brighton beach, handmade typography in the sand is associated with summer. I realised this when I researched 'summer' on google images and came across this photo.

I placed the water behind the title because I wanted to bring the readers attention to the title, to inform them straight away with an idea of what the page spread is about. I think that has workded successfully due to the fact that I have made the title itself attractive to the eye. I did this by highlighting the fact that alliteration has been used, by using a brigh pink shade for the letter at the beginning of the two words (the letter 'B'). Whereas for the rest of the two words; 'Brilliant' and 'Brighton' I used a bold, bright shade of orange. I chose these two colours and tones in particualr so that they match the picture of the Brighton Pavilion. I didn't want all of the readers attention to go towards the Pavilion therefore I used the same two colours for the title on a background that makes it stand out.

After I observed my feature page spread above, I realised that the composition of the pictures didn't symbolise 'summer' as it looked quite dull and uninteresting. I then decided to alter the page spread so that it seemed exciting and able to put teh readers in the mood to go to Brighton. I accomplished this by filling up blank spaces with shells at the top of the page (which i believe you can asscoiate with Brighton as they are collectable at the beach). The purpose of getting rid of blank spaces was done as a visual type of metaphor, symbolising the fact that people sometimes have 'jam-packed' holidays with no time for other plans. I also changed the composition of the four pictures on the right hand side of the page. I chose to place those pictures on teh page creatively, by making them look like Brighton postcards being randomly thrown on the page.

I decided to create a 'random' effect after I researched 'postcards' on google images, and appreciated the layout of these cards.

Feature Page Design Ideas

These are the two design ideas that I created for my feature page spread. The direction I decided to go in after doing my two mind maps is: travel. My theme for this page is Brighton as I have a picture of a street in Brighton as the background on the left page, and brighton sky/pebbles on the second page of the two designs. I have chosen to further develop the first design idea because I think the sky background on the page on the right is more visually and emotionally effective compared to the pebble background. I think this because the bright sky will attract readers more and allow them to feel positive as you do during the summer due to the clear blue sky.

Last Improvement of Advert; main aspects of my new advert

My final advert design

As I found it difficult to write a slogan on the chocolate sauce at the bottom I will paste the slogan onto the adverts using Adobe Illustrator so it will look like this:

Improved Advert

I made this advert due to the fact that I was unsatisfied with the outcomes of my previous advert designs. I decided to use Vladimir Konca as an inspiration for this new advert as I used edible substances (coffee beans and hot chocolate) to write the words with. Instead of taking a picture and adding it to a document on Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator I created the whole advert on a piece of paper that I will crop so the advert is only visible. I will then enlarge it to a larger size to fit my magazine. I decided to stick with naming my chocolate 'Moca' rather than 'Mocha' because I believe it's eye-catching and the fact that it is a made up product rather than the known flavour is the main reason why I chose to write it in that way. Also, I changed the arrangement of the chocolate, images of coffee beans and slogan simply because I think it looks better.

The final layout for my text

My final page
The ketchup bottle is the main focus on the page, although the scale is quite small. I think that the size and positioning works and allows the main focus of the page to be the picture because it seems as if it has its own section on page.

Moca Advertisment

This is the first advertisement that I created. I used Adobe Photoshop firstly to open up the picture of the chocolate and coffee beans to alter the colour using the 'channel mixer' option. I changed its colour by making I have a 'musky' look, bringing out a bold brown colour with lighter shades in other areas. This allows the picture to blend in with the background making it look more appealing to the public. I also used Photoshop to add the background and text. Although, in my design idea for my advert I included the fact that I would have a creamy rippling background, I did this experiment to compare two different ideas. After doing both experiments, I realised that my original idea is better, due to the fact that the background creates a large effect on the positive emotion that it can make people feel when looking at it.

Second experiment (the advert I will use):
