Billie Jean In-depth Analysis

Context:
Billie jean, also known as Sam Piyasena as a well known graphic designer who his famous for his design for the Nike Campaign in France, 2004 where he designed a vintage style of Nike trainers in attempt to revolutionise fashion, mainly with the younger population, which is shown on the poster above. This poster consists of various drawings of things relating to Nike that he may have seen over the past 30 years.

Meaning:
The theme of the poster is old school, vintage style street basketball which presented the Nike brand as a company that is 'in sync' with the youth back then, and the street lifestyle. This reputation that they had towards the public allowed them to relate to the 70s way of life.

Aesthetics:
Billie Jean has used graph paper and a biro pen (classroom equipment) very effectively as he has used these to draw doodles which creates a sense of a child like memory as it resembles a child in a classroom doodling on a piece of paper as a result of boredom. This creative retro theme that he has created, allows his poster to relate to the youth, which is his target market. Another important aspect of the poster is the large drawing of the vintage style trainer, which is the central piece as it is surrounded by the doodles. The composition of his drawings confirms the fact that he is mainly promoting the vintage trainer in the middle, using the doodles around it to remind the public of the retro theme the design comes.

Typographic Posters Inspired by the 51st Grammy Awards Posters

51st Grammy Awards Posters:

Bob Marley

Rhianna

Tom Yorke, from Radio Head
All of these posters have been made to advertise the 51st Grammy Awards, the portraits have been made out of text which consists of lyrics and song titles of the artists (Bob Marley, Rhianna and Tom Yorke) favourite songs.

I decided to create an image after being inspired by these posters; I used my favourite song artist, Frank Ocean and created a typographic portrait using the lyrics from one of his songs, using the video tutorial below.

Rob Ryan In-depth Analysis (Paper Cutting)

This paper cut was made by Rob Ryan, a Paper cutter artist who is British and born on 5th November 1962, he also does screen-printing, drawing and painting, but is particularly well known for his 'detailed paper cuts'. As a student, he studied at Trent Polytechnic and achieved a Master of Arts in printmaking from the Royal College of Art, where he graduated in 1987. His artwork has previously featured in Vogue, Elle and Stylist magazines and has worked with Paul Smith; a fashion designer. He has also illustrated book and album covers for 'The Book of Lost Things' by John Connolly; Erasure's album: Nightbird; 'The World to Come' by Dara Horn, and many more. One of his most known books is called 'This Is For You' and was his first book, published on October 4, 2007 which is a fairytale told through paper cut-outs.

This paper cut out was made by Rob Ryan to be displayed at the Windows of Liberty, which is a special window with decorations for Christmas. I like the way that Rob Ryan creates paper cut outs so detailed for example; the photo at the top of the page. I think it's very creative how he has created one image with different shapes, linking them altogether. This art piece shows a bird on a tree branch, holding another branch with its beak as it ties the two human figures together. I believe that he has thought carefully about the aesthetics of the art piece as he has created a calm scene using a calm colour as the background in which the shadow of the cut outs appear.

Sarah Esteje In-depth Analysis (Drawing)

http://blog.gessato.com/2012/03/19/animal-portraits-by-sarah-esteje/#ixzz2VjAFc7l

Sarah Esteje is a French photographer and illustrator who was born in 1987. She studied at Gobelins School and at LISAA College of Applied Arts, both in Paris. She has also made a variety of pictures for an exhibition in Paris. I looked at a blog to view some of her other work and realised that she creates large sized portraits of animals using a standard ballpoint pen.

I chose this picture of Sarah Esteje's to analyse because I love how effectively she has used the ballpoint pen to draw a portrait of a dog, in such detail. I love how she has created different tones, and layers of fur to the drawing by shading in some areas lighter/darker than others. The use of a ballpoint pen is very effective as the portrait looks so realistic. The smooth shading of the animals fur creates a calm mood which is also presented in the animals face; Sarah has drawn quite a blank facial expression on the animal.

I don't think that this portrait has any meaning because it is a simple picture of a dog. However, along with all of the other pictures of animals;

I think that the purpose of these pictures is just to express her love for nature and animals.

Steve Wilson & Si Scott

Steve Wilson is a Brighton based Illustrator. His art work is mainly inspired by 'discarded paraphernalia' and books that he finds in flea markets in Brighton. Steve enhances the possible spontaneous use of pencils, collage and printmaking, by using digital tools such as: Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. He has described his work as 'somewhere between pop and psychedelia'. I have chosen this piece to analyse because I like the patterns created and it also reminds me of a style of work created by another graphic artist: Si Scott.
This art piece was created by Si Scott. It relates to the image at the top of the page because it has 'swirly' patterns expanding from the main subject of the picture. I like this work made by Si Scott because he has used his name as the subject/theme but expanded from it using patterns. I believe the patterns he created are an expression of himself; presenting to us the simple fact that he likes to create swirly patterns. Also the use of different branches of patterns could be there to express the fact that he has many aspects to himself.
He has had a variety of clients such as: Universal music, Atlantic Records, NYC & GO, Space NK, Contagious, Sony BMG, The Guardian, Nike, Cocoa Cola and Diesel.

I like the way he has used a variety of bright colours for the advertisement such as; Red (as the background which is a well known colour for Coke, logos and adverts), green, yellow, pink, blue, white and orange. I think that he decided to use bright colours to catch the publics attention, I believe this was his main intention as it is an advertisment. I like that way that he has creatively created patterns and imagery coming out of the coke bottle, because it seems to relate to the phrase written: 'live on the Coke side of life'. I think thisbecause the patterns and pictures coming out of the bottle are there to represent the wide variety of lifestyles coke can give you.
